Today is the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Eucharist on the Lord’s Day. The image of the vineyard is prominent in today’s Scriptural texts. The “vine” is a special designation for Israel, the chosen nation which first heard the call of the One Lord and God. This vine is of God and has been planted to produce an abundant harvest for the Lord. Those called by God are expected to produce the good works which will further the growth of the Kingdom.
In today’s Gospel parable the Lord Jesus speaks of those (chief priests and elders of the people) who were charged with tending the vineyard and being responsible for its produce. However due to their mismanagement the Master sent His only Son (Jesus) to tend the vineyard but they killed Him who was the “cornerstone.”
In today’s Gospel Acclamation we sing the words of Jesus, “
I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will remain.” The disciples of Jesus have done so by encouraging one another with their example. In today’s epistle reading the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, “
Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.” We encourage one another today in producing a harvest which will be bountiful in building up the Kingdom of God. What a wonderful opportunity we have to support the BISHOP’S ANN UAL APPEAL which is currently taking place within the Diocese of Paterson. With our generous support we are able to help so many elderly, sick, homeless, disabled and those who are marginalized within the diocese which includes Morris, Passaic and Sussex Counties. So many depend upon our generous response to help them in their suffering. As we all recount the blessings the Lord has given us it behooves us to respond positively. Our loving response is what counts. Talk is cheap; our actions speak louder than words! By our generous participation in this year’s BISHOP’S ANN UAL APPEAL our Catholic Charities agencies will be funded to continue their good work being done in your/our name and for the promotion of the Kingdom of God on earth.
Should you decide not to participate in this year’s appeal I remind you of the words of the Lord Jesus from today’s Gospel: “
THEREFORE, I SAY TO YOU, THE KINGDOM OF GOD WILL BE TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU AND GIVEN TO A PEOPLE THAT WILL PRODUCE ITS FRUITS.” Thank God our parishioners have the reputation of being generous and charitable. I know that we will all participate in this year’s appeal and give whatever we are able to help those in need. “
Then the God of peace will be with you!”
