Coming together on “the first day of the week” we celebrate the Lord’s Day and the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The reading of the Holy Gospel at today’s Mass begins with the words, “
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying…” What follows is the teaching on the “Beatitudes”, the call to holiness which the disciples (students) of Jesus are to incorporate into their lives. As disciples, we are LIFE LONG LEARNERS in the ways of God’s Kingdom. The teaching concludes with death. Our learning of God’s ways is to have an impact upon our lives so that we can make a difference in the world. Our witness in society will help to transform it into the city of God.
Today in the United States is the beginning of CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK. The theme for this year’s observance is: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service”. Here in Rockaway our two parishes, Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Cecilia, have joined forces and resources to give life to DIVINE MERCY ACADEMY. Our new school is filled with a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm which has distinguished the school among many others in the diocese. I am convinced that the principal, faculty and staff are among the best. They have my confidence and full support. Divine Mercy Academy is making its mark in Rockaway as a stellar school, which teaches not only academics, but the Gospel values found in the Christian faith.
The parents who have chosen to send their children to our school have chosen wisely. This choice requires sacrifice and commitment, as do all good and noble enterprises. I salute the parents who go through great lengths to provide a solid Catholic education for their children. They know that the foundation is most important. It is from this genuine setting that the rest of life’s experiences can find a noble position and be built up into the whole person made in the image and likeness of God.
Catholic education must be a concern for ALL CATHOLICS. The Church has a rich history of being the champion and leader in education. Catholics have always seen their schools as promoters of evangelization and the common good. Catholic Schools have always inspired and equipped students to excel in works of service, for the advancement of knowledge, with faith in Christ our Savior. This is a mission well worth the support of all the faithful. Therefore, I ask that you be generous in the special collection which will be taken today to support DIVINE MERCY ACADEMY, our Catholic School in Rockaway. By doing so, you make an investment in our children and in our Church. Your support will help bring about a brighter future.
